After the Glaciers – St-Lawrence Boreal Center

Travel back in time and experience the unique world of the Glaciers a post-Glacial period with a visit to the Boreal Forest and Interpretation Center.

You will view a multimedia installation in three acts, composed of spectacular projections and settings, as well as different thematic zones:

1st act a 3D-inspired projections,

2nd act an elevator takes us down into the middle of a glacier

3rd act on a spectacular giant water screen we are the privileged witnesses of the rise of sea levels from melting glaciers.

Following the multimedia presentation, you will have free time to explore the interactive exhibits as well as the museum gift shop.

St-Lawrence Boreal Center & Shell Valley – Garden of the Glaciers
Upon arrival in Shell Valley you will have a brief presentation on the post-Glacial period, the melting of the Glacier that happened 8000 years ago and the formation of the Ancient Sea. You will than have the opportunity to experience first-hand an archeological dig as you are supplied with the necessary tools to search the surrounding cliffs of sand and soils for a variety of shells left behind by the receding seas.
Walking Tour of the Glacier Garden
Located 8 km (5mi.) east of Baie-Comeau on a territory of 40 km2 (15 sq.mi.), the Maritime Glacier Garden is bordered by 17 km (11 mi.) of coastline. Visitor-explorers can participate in a varity of guided tour scenarios and outdoor activities in this spectacular landscape carved out by glaciers.
Via Ferrata – Adventure Walk

The longest Via Ferrata in the America (2,1 km of fun!)

Explore that huge park with the relic of the glacier.

Observe the sea with 2 Via Ferrata: via des mers (1,3 km) and the via des cannelures (850 meters).

Via Ferrata & Zip line
Also: 2 wonderful zip line 300 meters, 1 rappel descent 45 meters, camping deck, boat transport, hiking trails and glacier interpretation.
Sea Kayaking with the Minke Whale
Board a stable two-person kayak for a 2 hour guided tour through the calm waters of the Anglais and Moulin Bay and learn about the unique rock formations and marine life and possibly spot a Minke Whale.
Hollow Gravity Dam – Manic 2
See the first hollow-joint gravity dam that has been in service at the Manic-Outardes complex. In the reception building tour you will see an actual turbine, an exhibit hall and a multimedia room that explains the construction and operation of the dam. After follow the tour guide that will bring you in the heart of Manic-2 dam and visit one of the station’s powerful generators.
 
Best of Baie-Comeau
See Grand Baie-Comeau City tour. There will be a photo stop at the magnificent Havre St-Pancrace lookout, 600 meters high.
About 10 km further you will visit the Forest Interpretation Center. Information on the forest industry that was crucial to the North Shore. Activities such as cutting, hauling, driving, and other aspects of life in the forest are presented. Typical buildings, period objects, old photographs illustrate, lumberjacks, living conditions and way of life period.

The Manic 5 dam is a multiple arch and buttress structure that is 1.3 km long and soars to a height of 214 m. You will enjoy a guided visit of this amazing structure from its underground station to the panoramic view afforded from the top of the dam before your return back to the pier. (Duration: 5 hours)

Manic-5 by bus
This adventurous tour is approximately a 3 hour bus ride (each way) takes visitors from Baie-Comeau over the vast wilderness of the Manicouagan Region to tour one of the world’s most spectacular dams. The Manic-5 dam is a multiple arch and buttress structure that is 1.3 km long and soars to a height of 214 m. You will enjoy a guided visit of this amazing structure from its underground station to the panoramic view afforded from the top of the dam before your return helicopter flight back to the pier. (Duration: 9,5 hours)
 
Manic-2

Note: this tour will be offered only if the ship stays in port until 8 p.m. Manic-2 is an important hollow-joint gravity dam. Visitors tour a reception building which holds an actual turbine, an exhibit hall, and a multimedia room. There is then a guided tour in the heart of Manic-2 and a visit to one of the station’s powerful generators.

 

 

Argile Eau Mer & Parc Nature of Pointe-aux-Outardes
Discover with a 45 minutes guided interpretative walk the nature park of Pointe-aux-Outardes that contains many plants and animals species found on Quebec’s North Shore. A sandy beach, wide flats, and kilometres of wooden boardwalks, observe thousands of birds (depending the season) and discover the splendors of the surrounding vegetation. At the Argile Eau Mer; visitors can walk along this magnificent beach and discover its exceptional clay deposits containing a vast array of medicinal plants. A tour of the facility shows how the products are made and how they can enhance one’s health, beauty, and vitality.
Tadoussac : one of the most beautiful bays in the world
A 7 hours visiting tour. Orientation tour of the Village and free time to explore on you own.
Visit the Chauvin Trading Post. The exhibit covers five themes: pre-history, the meeting of two nations, trading, the oil trade (whale hunting) and the trading post. A video, guided tours and dedicated guides eager to answer all questions.
Followed by a visit to The Indian chapel that was built in 1747 and is the oldest wooden church still in existence in North America. You will find several religious objects from that era on display as well as information about missionary life.
Next visit the Marine Mammal Interpretation center (CIMM). This stop is a must in order to fully appreciate whale watching. Videos about whales, games, interpretation activities, and a skeleton collection that is unique in North America. Also view exclusive film projections.
Time on your own, Tadoussac has some of the most scenic waking trails in Quebec. The Colline-de-l’Anse-à-l’Eau trail (1.2 km / 0.75 mi) offers a unique panorama. Located in the heart of the village you will have a 360 degree view of the fjord. The nearby Pointe-de-l’Islet trail (0.8 km / 0.5 mi) starts at the wharf.
The Pionneer’s Road  
The National St-Lawrence River Shipreck Center presents a multimedia story of numerous strange and extraordinary shipwrecks on the St-Lawrence River.
Followed by visiting the Pointe-des-Monts Lighthouse. Opened in 1830 with a whale-oil lamp. Visitors find exhibits on all seven floors of the lighthouse: furniture, interpretive panels, photos illustrating the living conditions of the guardians, and stories of shipwrecks and the survivors who sometimes had to stay here throughout the entire winter.
Arrive to Godbout village you will visit the Aboriginal and Inuit Museum. This museum has a private collection that is an excellent introduction to Aboriginal and Inuit art.
The last stop will be at Franquelin village where you will have lunch and guided visit at the Lumberjack village. Activities such as cutting, hauling, driving, and other aspects of life in the forest are presented at this interpretation center. Typicals buildings, period objects and old photographs illustrate the living conditions and way of life of this period.
